Deterministic Chance?

چکیده
Can there be deterministic chance? That is, can there be objective chance values other than 0 or 1, in a deterministic world? I will argue that the answer is no. In a deterministic world, the only function that can play the role of chance is one that outputs just 0s and 1s. The role of chance involves connections from chance to credence, possibility, time, intrinsicness, lawhood, and causation. These connections do not allow for deterministic chance. 1 Overview 2 Four Arguments for Deterministic Chance 3 Four Conceptions of Deterministic Chance 4 The Role of Chance 5 The Case against Posterior Deterministic Chance 6 The Case against Initial Deterministic Chance 7 Epistemic Chance Can there be deterministic chance? That is, can there be objective chance values other than 0 or 1, in a deterministic world? I will argue that the answer is no. In a deterministic world, the only function that can play the role of chance is one that outputs just 0s and 1s. 1 Overview It was once widely assumed that determinism and chance were incompatible. That is, it was once widely assumed that deterministic worlds could only have extremal (0 or 1) objective chances. Thus Popper declares: Today I can see why so many determinists, . . . believe in a subjectivist interpretation of probability: it is, in a way, the only reasonable possibility which they can accept; for objective physical probabilities are incompatible with determinism; . . . A Chance Constrained Multiple Objective Goal Programming Model of Fuzzy QFD and FMEA: Model Development
There are varieties of QFD combination forms available that can help management to choose the right model for his/her types of problem. The proposed MOCC-QFD-FMEA model is a right model to include variety of objectives as well as the risk factors into the model of the problem. Due to the fact that the model also takes into consideration the concept of Fuzzy set, it further allows management...
متن کاملDeterministic Chance
I argue that there are non-trivial objective chances (that is, objective chances other than 0 and 1) even in deterministic worlds. The argument is straightforward. I observe that there are probabilistic special scientific laws even in deterministic worlds. These laws project nontrivial probabilities for the events that they concern. And these probabilities play the chance role and so should be ...
متن کاملFractional CCP: A Fuzzy Goal Programming Approach
Abstract It is the purpose of this article to introduce a linear approximation technique for solving a fractional chance constrained programming (CC) problem. For this purpose, a fuzzy goal programming model of the equivalent deterministic form of the fractional chance constrained programming is provided and then the process of defuzzification and linearization of the problem is started. A sam...
متن کاملDeterministic Laws and Epistemic Chances
In this paper, a concept of chance is introduced that is compatible with deterministic physical laws, yet does justice to our use of chance-talk in connection with typical games of chance, and in classical statistical mechanics. We take our cue from what Poincaré called “the method of arbitrary functions,” and elaborate upon a suggestion made by Savage in connection with this. Comparison is mad...
متن کاملOptimal production strategy of bimetallic deposits under technical and economic uncertainties using stochastic chance-constrained programming
In order to catch up with reality, all the macro-decisions related to long-term mining production planning must be made simultaneously and under uncertain conditions of determinant parameters. By taking advantage of the chance-constrained programming, this paper presents a stochastic model to create an optimal strategy for producing bimetallic deposit open-pit mines under certain and uncertain ...
